From golden dragonflies to colourful wishing wells, Johanna Basford’s creativity may leak across each page of her bestselling books but it is her readers who truly bring them to life.
The rising star of the colouring book for adults phenomenon, Johanna’s intricate pen drawings of butterflies and castles created in her loft studio in rural Aberdeenshire have seen people across the globe reclaim colouring books from the kids.
Graduating from Dundee’s Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in 2005 with a degree in Printed Textiles, Johanna’s portfolio of a mixture of monochrome silk screen prints and drawings soon grew to pencil sketches and rambling pen and ink designs.
With a staunch belief in hand drawing which ‘captures a sense of energy and character’ in comparison to computer generated pixels, Johanna’s series of colouring books for adults have captivated audiences, inspired by a 'pretty lively imagination as well as a love for nature'.
The release of debut book Secret Garden in 2013 catapulted colouring for adults as a means of stress relief into the limelight, selling 1.4 million copies worldwide. The release of second book Enchanted Forest was also a hit.
With third book Lost Ocean due to be published on October 22, Johanna has taken inspiration from her childhood to dive into the waves to surface with intricate drawings of whales and seashells.
Growing up with marine biologist parents, Johanna spent her weekends on research vessels and visiting scientific aquariums.
Translating her love of the sea onto the pages of Lost Ocean, a whirlpool of ink awaits for fans to bring to life with colour with shoals of fish, mermaids and gleaming pirate treasure are all hiding within the pages just waiting to be discovered.
And in advance of the Lost Ocean release, the artist has decided to share her top colouring tips with her fans, with hints such as which materials to use and the distinction between pen and pencils.
But of course, the readers poised with the colouring pencils are the ones who truly bring Johanna's work to life.
Lost Ocean by Johanna Basford is published by Virgin Books priced £12.99
