Top adorable animal pictures from Scotland mark World Animal Day

Animal conservationists across Scotland have got together to celebrate World Animal Day.

The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland has launched a Twitter takeover, sending out a tweet every hour dedicated to some of the most endangered animals within their collections and the conservation projects supporting them.

From Przewalski horses to Partula snails, many species will be highlighted throughout the day, including the Scottish wild cat, a native species rarer than the Bengal tiger which is threatened by a diluted gene pool due to interbreeding with domestic cats.

Also featured will be the vital conservation projects being carried out to protect the near threatened Pallas’s cat in Iran and Mongolia.

World Animal Day on October 4, is a celebration of animal life in all shapes and sizes, as well as highlighting the connection between people and animals that has existed for thousands of years.

Celebrated every October around the feast day of St Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals, the international day aims to raise global awareness of improving animal welfare and highlight the plight of threatened species.

The Twitter takeover will last eight hours with RZSS Edinburgh Zoo and RZSS Highland Wildlife Park, the two visitor attractions owned by the Scottish conservation charity.

Jo Elliot, Animal Collection Manager at RZSS Edinburgh Zoo, said: "It’s very important for us to raise awareness of the lesser known animals in our collection and let people know about the valuable work we do.

"As a charity, it’s great to use World Animal Day to draw attention to some of the great projects we are involved in and all the species we are actively helping; Twitter is such a great platform for that."

You can follow @EdinburghZoo and @HighlandWPark for the photo updates throughout the day.

In the mean time, here is a look back at some of the zoo's best animal photos taken over the years.
