The opening of a hotly anticipated new Fringe venue in The Meadows has been delayed due to strong winds.
Underbelly announced that the larger of its two venues, which make up the new Circus Hub, will now open on Monday, August 10, instead of the planned date of Friday, August 7.
Tickets have already been sold for shows from August 7 onwards with affected ticket holders being offered the chance to reschedule or get a refund.
The venue organiser confirmed on Monday that the delay opening the Lafayette tent is down to gusting winds and that the forecast is for more wind over the next couple of days.
Just hours before the announcement, Underbelly posted pictures of the tent construction on its blog.
The statement said: "Due to issues with strong wind gusts in Edinburgh today and with further winds forecast over the next couple of days, we have been prevented from putting the cover on Lafayette, the larger tent structure, on schedule.
“As a result we have made the decision to delay the opening of the shows in Lafayette until Monday next week (10 August).
“The smaller tent, Beauty, will open as planned on Friday."
The statement added: “The Underbelly and Fringe box offices are contacting all customers with tickets for shows in the Lafayette tent this weekend and we very much hope they can come to performances from Monday onwards and throughout the Fringe.
“Everybody is also able to come and enjoy the variety of shows in the Beauty from its opening on Friday.
“However those who cannot reschedule their visit to Circus Hub will be given a full refund.
“We apologise for any inconvenience and customers requesting a refund or with any other queries about their ticket should contact the point of sale from which they bought their tickets.
“All other Underbelly venues will open as planned on Wednesday and Thursday. We and all our performers very much look forward to welcoming you to Circus Hub in all its full glory.”
Underbelly announced the arrival of the new Fringe venue The Circus Hub in April this year. It is dedicated solely to circus with 12 shows across two big top tents running until Saturday, August 29.
Shows in The Lafayette tent
- BARBU Electro Trad Cabaret
- The Hogwallops
- La Meute
- Ockham's Razor
The Lafayette is the larger of the two tents with a capacity of 750 people, with shows running throughout the day.
The programme will feature four UK premieres and renowned circus groups from countries including Australia, Belgium, France and the Czech Republic.
Popular Underbelly Christmas show Limbo will return as well as Festival Fringe hit Bromance, which received the Total Theatre Award in 2014.
Fringe sell-out Piff the Magic Dragon will host a late night cabaret event, alongside new shows including Cirk La Putyka and Cirque Le Roux.
On top of the large-scale jaw-dropping spectacles, the venue will also host family circus workshops run by Edinburgh’s new centre for circus Full Cirqle where children aged eight and above will be able to learn the tricks of the circus trade from juggling and hula hooping to acrobatics and aerial skills.
