After the storm: The best Edinburgh lightning photos and videos

After the storm: The best Edinburgh lightning photos and videos

The spectacular lightning over Edinburgh last night was captured from every angle by locals.

The thunder storm may have passed over the city in the dead of night, but that didn't stop people from taking photos and videos of the awe-inspiring display.

And according to the Met Office, more than 15,000 lightning bolts hit Scotland over the night.

One of the most incredible photos taken of the storm was shared by Kit Carruthers.

Kit told STV how he managed to take the stunning image.

He said: "The photo was taken from my living room, just off Ferry Road in the north of Edinburgh.

"I'd been tipped off about possible thunderstorms by Grant Ritchie, who runs the Real Edinburgh Facebook page.

"I waited all day for something to happen, and when it did (finally!) I took a series of 20 second exposures over about 45 minutes using an amateur level digital SLR camera and a tripod.

"I didn't know what I was going to get, as it was my first time photographing lightning! When I saw what I had, I figured it'd make a more dramatic photo if I combined 10 or so of the best into one image! Seemed to work out pretty well!"

But Kit was by no means the only person to capture some incredible footage of the storm.

The person who tipped off Kit, Grant Ritchie, also shared his own, after waiting patiently for the right moment too.

James Barlow took this beautiful shot of the lightning at Portobello Beach.

Also near Portobello, Anthony Robson managed to get some more stunning shots, whilst hiding from the heavy rain in a gazebo in his back garden.

Patrick, who is one half of the photo duo behind Edinburgh Photographic also got hundreds of likes on Facebook with this dramatic photo.

Stuart Robertson shot this video, which shows repeated lightning strikes over the city centre.

Don Munro of Edinburgh Photography Walks managed to capture this brooding panorama from the Braid Hills Road.

He explained: "I rushed out my house just before 1am and headed to a couple of places but settled on the Braid Hills road as it has good clear elevated views over the whole city.

"I caught the tail end of the storm as it was heading out east. I used a Nikon D800 camera 24-70mm lens and my settings were ISO100, f4.5, 20 seconds. I shot multiple 20-30 second exposures but this frame was the best I got."

Twitter user @Kevlarhead was in Cramond when the storm arrived.

Just a little further west, Karsten Moerman, of 56 North Photography, captured this shot looking out towards Leith Walk. He said: "I was just on my way to bed when it all kicked off so I diverted to the living room with the camera and snapped away until 1:30 in the morning."

And this photo by David Roger-Sharpe also proved popular on Twitter.

Along the coast at Musselburgh, photographer Adam Troup said he lasted just seven minutes in the storm before he got so scared he had to run back indoors.

But not before he got the photos he needed to make this composite image in the can.

He said: "As soon as I saw the flashes and heard the thunder I just had to get dressed and sprint down to the beach with my camera - very excited as I have never photographed lightning before.

"I was out for maybe 7 minutes max and before I knew what had happened I was sprinting back to the flat in terror!

"This photo is made up of three separate photos taken on a tripod, the last lightning I captured looked/sounded/felt like it hit the ground right next to me! Literally everything went white and along with the flash there was the loudest bang I've ever heard and I literally felt like I was running for my life!"

Also in East Lothian, Jim Hunter got a shot of this breathtaking skyscape as the storm passed over Humbie.

In Tranent, Fraser Price got this shot.
